70-Year-Old Woman Attacked On Windsor Locks Street; Suspect In Custody

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — A man is being held in police custody in lieu of $150,000 bond after a 70-year-old woman was attacked while walking or jogging on Old County Road Thursday morning.

Around 9:54 a.m., a 911 caller told police the woman had just been assaulted by a man. Investigation revealed the woman had been struck in the back of the head with a closed fist, causing a serious laceration as well as injuries to at least one finger from a fall, police said.

The victim was taken to an area hospital with a serious head injury, police said.

Several police officers, including a canine unit, canvassed the area in search of the attacker. He was located by Connecticut State Police troopers on their property on nearby Schoephoester Road, and was positively identified as the assailant, police said.

Alexander Russell, 40, of no certain address, was charged with first-degree assault on an elderly person and first-degree reckless endangerment. He is slated to be arraigned Friday, police said.

Russell and the victim do not know each other, and a motive has yet to be established, police said.
