WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — New details have emerged about the Windsor Locks man who died last week in a drowning incident in Florida.
Jason Michael “Jay” DeGray, 42, died Tuesday, April 14, 2026, while on vacation with his family in Cocoa Beach, according to police. Cocoa Beach fire officials previously said a 42-year-old Connecticut man died after he was caught in a rip current.
Fire officials said crews were called around 1 p.m. Tuesday to the area near 4th Street South for a water rescue. When firefighters arrived, they found four people in the water.
Officials said lifesaving measures were started for two victims, including the Connecticut man and a 34-year-old woman, Ebony Mount, from Ohio. Both were taken to Cape Canaveral Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
Investigators said they believed the drownings were related to a rip current. Cocoa Beach officials had not publicly released the victims’ names as of noon the following day.
Police said DeGray died while trying to save children from the rip current, according to WFSB 3 TV.
DeGray’s obituary at the East Windsor Community Funeral Home described him as a Windsor Locks resident who was born Jan. 28, 1984, in Farmington. It said he spent 25 years working in the flooring industry and was known for his strong work ethic and skill.
The obituary said DeGray was above all a devoted father to his children, Bailey, Bryce and Brynn. It also described him as a passionate Raiders fan and said his bravery in his final moments would never be forgotten.
Cutting Edge Installations, Inc of Enfield, said DeGray was "one of our valued employee(s)."
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time," the company said. "Our team will miss his presence here; his quick wit and always believing “it will work out”. His contributions and friendship will be missed by all who had the opportunity to work with him. His last moments were spent being a TRUE HERO and DEDICATED FATHER."
He is survived by his partner, Meagan DeGray, their children, and other family members. Calling hours are scheduled for Friday, April 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. at East Windsor Community Funeral Home, 37 Gardner St., East Windsor, with a prayer service to follow at 7 p.m.
A celebration of life is scheduled from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. that night at the Gathering Ground in Windsor Locks. Burial will be private.
