WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — Windsor Locks officials are urging residents to take precautions as an extreme heat warning remains in effect across Connecticut.
The Windsor Locks Office of Emergency Management said daytime temperatures are expected to approach or exceed 100 degrees, with heat index values making outdoor conditions especially dangerous.
Extreme heat can quickly lead to heat-related illness, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers and pets, according to the town.
Residents are encouraged to stay in air-conditioned buildings when possible, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activity to the early morning or evening.
Officials also reminded residents never to leave children, older adults or pets unattended in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.
Anyone experiencing confusion, loss of consciousness or a body temperature above 103 degrees should receive immediate emergency help, officials said.
A cooling center is available at the Windsor Locks Senior Center, 519 Spring St., on Wednesday and Thursday during normal business hours.
If additional cooling services become necessary because of prolonged heat or power outages, the Ella Grasso Room at Windsor Locks Town Hall will open Friday and through the weekend as needed, according to the town.
The town said the Town Hall cooling center, along with any extended Senior Center hours, will be staffed by members of the Windsor Locks Community Emergency Response Team.
Residents are asked to monitor local weather forecasts and town communications for updates. Cooling center updates will be shared through the town’s social media platforms, Everbridge emergency notification system and local media outlets.
