EAST WINDSOR, CT — A large animal rescue in East Windsor ended with a difficult outcome Thursday after a horse trapped in deep mud had to be euthanized, according to the Warehouse Point Fire District.
Emergency crews were called to the Scantic Road area of the Warehouse Point section of East Windsor at 12:26 p.m. July 2 for a report of a horse trapped in mud, officials said.
Responders found an East Windsor police officer and the town’s animal control officer about 160 feet down a wooded ravine near a water-filled stream, according to the fire district. The horse had become mired in deep mud and was believed to have been trapped for an estimated two to three hours.
Because of the complexity of the rescue, Fenton River Veterinary Hospital and the Enfield Fire Department Special Operations Team were called to the scene to provide additional personnel and specialized rescue equipment, officials said.
Firefighters and rescue personnel were able to free the horse from the mud and began a low-angle rope rescue. Officials said the terrain, the horse’s advanced age and its deteriorating medical condition made the operation especially difficult.
Veterinarians administered medication to help stabilize the horse while crews secured rope systems and rescue equipment, according to the fire district.
Despite the coordinated rescue effort, the attending veterinarian determined the horse’s condition had deteriorated to the point where euthanasia was the most humane option, officials said. Firefighters and rescue personnel then helped recover and remove the animal from the ravine.
“This incident required exceptional teamwork, technical rescue skills, and compassion from everyone involved,” the Warehouse Point Fire District said in the release. “While the outcome was not what anyone had hoped for, every responding agency worked tirelessly under extremely difficult conditions to give this animal every possible chance.”
