WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — Bradley International Airport has landed more than $11 million in federal funding for the next phase of a project that will extend one of its taxiways.
The Federal Aviation Administration announced the $11,087,898 grant on Sept. 14. The money was awarded to the Connecticut Airport Authority through the agency's Airport Improvement Program.
Federal award records describe the work as an extension of Taxiway T, one of the paved routes aircraft use to travel between runways, terminals and other parts of the airfield.
The larger project calls for extending the taxiway by 3,900 feet to bring the airport into conformity with current standards. The latest grant will fund Phase 4, which covers a 2,400-foot section.
The federal money will cover 75 percent of the phase's cost. Another $3,695,966 will come from nonfederal sources, bringing the total funding package to approximately $14.8 million.
Of the federal award, about $1.7 million comes from funding Bradley receives based on passenger activity. The remaining $9.4 million is discretionary funding awarded by the FAA, according to the agency's grant list.
The FAA uses the Airport Improvement Program to support projects involving runways, taxiways, lighting, signs and other airport infrastructure. Airports receive annual entitlement funding based on passenger volume and can also compete for discretionary money when project costs exceed that amount.
Federal records list a grant period running from Sept. 16, 2026, through Sept. 15, 2030. A construction start date was not included in the award information.
