Gensi-Viola Post of the American Legion in Windsor Locks to Plant Trees With North Street School Students on April 27

The Gensi-Viola Post of the American Legion in Windsor Locks, in cooperation with North Street Elementary School, will again sponsor a tree planting project to commemorate Arbor Day on April 27. In case of heavy rain, the rain date will be April 30.

This year the Post, with the help of the students, will plant two trees in several locations around the school. The trees are 8 to 10 feet in height and will be planted in two shifts. The first shift is at 10 a.m. to be followed by the second shift at 1 p.m. to accommodate all kindergarten students in both sessions. Each student participates in the planting of the trees by placing a scoop of soil on the root ball and then watering them.

Post members will have a question and answer period pertaining to Arbor Day prior to the planting. The teachers will also conduct an Arbor Day program as part of the planned activities.

The local Legion Post has had an Arbor Day program with the school for the past 30 years and hopes to continue this program annually to encourage and develop an interest in nature and conservation for each student in their formative years.
