Memorial Day Week End – Food, Family & Friends

Considered by many the first weekend of the summer cookout season, it’s time to clean up that grill, and the “entertainment” area – different areas for different households.  For the Lomba’s it means cleaning the deck, possibly re-staining (possibly meaning definitely in our case), and can we power wash the siding before the first cookout.  Not this year.  Something always gets in the way of our best laid plans.  This year it has definitely been the rain. And that Mega Tag Sale we had last weekend.  (Thank you all for coming)

But, as usual, that didn’t stop me from planning a cookout for Sunday afternoon.  Some family, some friends that good mix of people that everyone enjoys.  Lots of food, plenty of refreshments, kids running around in the backyard, sounds great doesn’t it?  

Ah, but the planning that goes into “having a few people over”, shopping, cooking, coordinating the “what can I bring people.”  Luckily the group we usually invite is great about bringing things, this weekend I don’t have to worry about the Tossed Salad, Fruit Salad, chips, dips, or drinks for the kids.  My shopping list is pretty easy too, pre-made hamburgers, hot dogs, rolls, potato salad and macaroni salad (from Geissler’s – they make it like my mom’s) and something for dessert.  Of course I’ll be making a birthday cake – decadent chocolate with chocolate frosting with sprinkles, as my husbands birthday is Saturday.  Not that we need an excuse for chocolate cake.

Plus – a little indoors clean up, because at one time or another, everyone will be in the house – helping or getting in the way.  Why do people always end up in the kitchen even when you’re having an outdoor party?

Well, planning and cleaning aside – we women can do that with one arm tied behind our back, we’ll have a great day – Hopefully with NO RAIN. 

I know - complaints abound, but I LOVE to entertain, I really don't need much of a reason to have people over and cook.
