WINDSOR LOCKS-EAST WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • Displays of research and creativity filled the Student Center at Eastern Connecticut State University on April 13 for the annual CREATE conference. CREATE stands for "Celebrating Research Excellence and Artistic Talent at Eastern," and is the University's premier undergraduate conference of the academic year.
    Presenters from East Windsor were Selena Hinkel, who majors in Social Work and gave a poster presentation titled "Examining The Relationship Between Discrimination & Self-Esteem Among College Students," and Melody Slater, who majors in Biology and gave a poster presentation titled "Identifying The Scorpion Gut Microbiome." CREATE featured more than 200 students of all majors who led oral and poster presentations, panel discussions, music and dance performances, art and photography exhibitions, as well as documentary viewings and new-media demonstrations.
  • The Communication Department at Eastern Connecticut State University held its annual Celebration of Excellence on April 19. During the event, students were inducted into the communication honor society, Lambda Pi Eta, and awards were given for excellence in different areas of the communication field. Among the inductees and award winners was Kate Cobb of Windsor Locks. Cobb was inducted into the honor society.

  • Emmanuel Collge student Ashley Paleski of Broad Brook was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), the national leadership honor society, on Tuesday, April 24. Membership in Omicron Delta Kappa is granted to students who demonstrate leadership in athletics, campus or community service, social and religious activities, campus government, creative and performing arts, journalism and media, and scholarship. Undergraduate students who are juniors and seniors and rank in the upper 35 percent of their class are eligible for membership.
