Drunk Driver Hits Windsor Locks Police Cruiser

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — A Hebron man was charged with driving under the influence early Friday after police said he struck a marked Windsor Locks patrol cruiser stopped at the end of Stanton Road.

A Windsor Locks officer had completed a check of town facilities at the dead-end roadway and was stopped in the cruiser to finish documentation when a westbound 2018 Toyota Camry approached, police said.

According to police, the driver attempted to go around the stationary cruiser by driving over a curb and onto an adjacent grassy area. The Camry then struck the driver’s-side front of the cruiser, disabling both vehicles.

Both the officer and the Toyota’s driver were evaluated at the scene and reported no injuries, police said. The vehicles were towed.

Police said officers observed signs of impairment and administered standardized field sobriety tests. Edward Lydon, 22, of Hebron, was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Lydon was released on a $5,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear Aug. 17 in state Superior Court in Hartford.

Stanton Road serves several town facilities, including animal control, public works, the water pollution control facility and school-bus parking, police said. It is not a route to Interstate 91 or another through road.
