EAST WINDSOR, CT — Earlier this week, Windsor Locks-East Windsor Patch asked readers to nominate their favorite local business for Business of the Year. Many area businesses have managed to navigate the turbulence of 2020 with steadfast determination and an unwavering commitment to the clients they serve.

A number of respondents from East Windsor sang the praises of Golden Irene's Restaurant, a longtime staple of the region at 18 Mullen Road for over 30 years. In the wake of severe restrictions placed on dining establishments due to the coronavirus pandemic, owner George Akkouris was among the earliest restaurateurs to adapt by making family-size orders available for take-out. He also frequently created short Facebook videos, encouraging those in need to come in for a free meal.

In late July, Golden Irene's was among several East Windsor businesses victimized by smash-and-grab burglaries. Nonetheless, just hours after losing a considerable sum, Akkouris was back on Facebook, again encouraging folks in need to come by and grab a free meal.

Here are excerpts from some of the nominations received in favor of Golden Irene's.

  • "Throughout the pandemic, George has reduced his prices for families in need, given food away, made food for those working on the front lines, and had his business vandalized. He is a true, local hero." - Andrea Church
  • "Owner George and crew have gone above and beyond to feed struggling families. He has offered very reasonably priced family meal deals. The meals are delicious and hearty. He tries never to turn anyone away, helping as many people as he can. I've never been more impressed by an owner of a restaurant. I'm thankful for his kindness and generosity." - Ann Gregoire
  • "The owner, George, has fed people for free throughout the pandemic. He will not let anyone go hungry. He was even robbed months ago and George just kept it moving and still offered to feed people for free. On top of how amazing he is, his staff is equally as genuine and make you feel like family. Golden Irene’s has some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. George deserves the world." - Cristy Williams
  • "This restaurant has been giving to any person every day food for free since COVID-19 started. The owner and staff has been absolutely fantastic. This is a place that should always be noticed. I want to thank all so much for everything they did and continue to do. God bless them all." - Ann Waterman
  • "I nominate Golden Irene’s because George is a wonderful man. He’s a great cook, business man and has a great heart. He has done much to serve our community." - Christy McCollum
  • "Very generous to all during COVID-19, especially those financially hampered." - Caren and Dean Rasmussen
