Elaine's Coffee House In Broad Brook: Your Newest Breakfast Stop

Owners of Elaine's Pizza serving fresh coffee, breakfast sandwiches and pastries.

There’s a new place in town to get your caffeine fix. Elaine’s Coffee House, owned and operated by the family behind Elaine’s Pizza, is now serving up your favorite morning beverages and pastries.

Siblings Peter and Marianne Koumlelis run the Broad Brook coffee shop at 147 Main Street, which opened Nov. 26. The new business is located in the small building that formerly housed Elaine’s Pizza, before it moved to 139 Main Street in 2007.

“We just thought this was something nice that’s never really been in town,” said Peter Koumlelis. “We’ve gotten a very good response.”

The coffee shop serves breakfast sandwiches on bagels, croissants, English muffins or biscuits with a choice of eggs, cheese and meats (ham, bacon and sausage.) Baked goods include doughnuts, bagels, muffins, coffee rolls and danishes. Recently, Greek pastries like baklava joined the mix – they’re handmade by the coffee house’s namesake and the Koumlelis siblings’ mother, Elaine.

Fresh-brewed coffee – available both hot and iced - is made from Omar Coffee Company’s beans.  And unlike many chain coffeehouses, there’s no extra charge for flavor shots (hazelnut and caramel are the most popular here.)

While they’re just serving drip coffee at the moment, espresso-based specialty drinks are forthcoming, Koumlelis says.

“We were going to wait until spring, but we’ve had a very high demand for them,” he said.

The space was completely renovated, a project that took about two months, Koumlelis said. The coffee house now seats 14, with a mix of tables and couches. Patrons enjoy free wireless Internet.

Though the siblings have been involved in restaurants for much of their lives, this is still a new and exciting venture for them, Peter Koumlelis said.

“We’ve never been involved with a type of business like this. But at the same time, it’s a good location in the center of town. There’s not really anything like this around here,” he said.

Elaine’s Coffee House is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays; 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends. 147 Main Street, 860-623-0405.

Elaine's celebrates its Grand Opening on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in conjunction with the East Windsor Chamber of Commerce. First Selectwoman Denise Menard is expected to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The business will offer free coffee during the event.
