A public forum regarding Main Street revitalization has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 7 p.m. at Windsor Locks High School, 58 South Elm Street. The theme of the forum is Transit Oriented Development (TOD) - Revitalizing the Downtown Core. The Town commissioned a study of Transit Oriented Development opportunities along Main Street north from the Route 140 bridge to the intersection with Suffield Street. Transit Oriented Development is retail, office and residential developments in walking distance of transit stops.
The study explores: improving economic viability; market potential; commuter rail; pedestrian, bicycle and automobile traffic; public and open space connections; and creating a sense of place, culture and history. Many initiatives are currently underway in this area. The Board of Selectmen have agreed to the acquisition of the historic train station for $1 which will now go to Town Meeting for its approval. The Montgomery property has been acquired through a tax foreclosure action. The Town continues to work toward the relocation of the train platform back downtown. Several new businesses have opened up in the Windsor Locks Commons. The Town will be pursuing a federal STP Urban grant in the amount of $2.5 million for streetscape and traffic improvements along Main Street. Your participation and input toward creating this vision is vital to its success. The TOD study has been generously funded by the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation.
