Original story

East Windsor police officers interrupted an assault-in-progress of a female victim early Thursday morning and the male suspect cut his own throat just before officers were about to deploy a Taser on him.

NBC Connecticut is reporting that a law enforcement source has identified the suspect as James Michael Polk, 43, of South Windsor and that the attack was a sexual assault. Polk is a registered sex offender, according to NBC.

East Windsor police received a 911 hang-up call just before 3 a.m. that was believed to be a female in medical distress.

Dispatchers were able to determine the origin of the call and officers responded to the scene, located at 8 Thompson Road, according to a press release.

Police arrived and forced entry into a business in the building, called Power Service Concepts. Police determined they interrupted an assault-in-progress where a male was assaulting the female.

The female ran to the police and the suspect confronted officers with a knife in his hand. At gun point, the officers ordered the suspect to drop the knife and were about to deploy the Taser on him, when the suspect turned the knife onto himself and cut his own throat, according to police.

Officers provided medical attention to the suspect and victim, both of whom were transported to Hartford Hospital for treatment.

Police said an arrest is imminent and the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Unit is assisting with the investigation.

Anyone with information concerning this investigation is asked to call the East Windsor Police Department and ask for Detective Scott Roberts at 860.292.8240.
