Picture Windsor Locks - Then And Now

An old photo and brief story from Windsor Locks history, and how that site appears today.

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — For today's look back into Windsor Locks history, we dig into the pages of the 1971 edition of the Windsor Locks High School yearbook, the Herald. Page 129 features an advertisement for the Whirley Car Wash.

The ad states it is located "between Spring & Elm Streets on Route 75," but I'm not sure exactly where. Do-it-yourself car washes cost 25 cents, while the automatic car wash was one buck. The facility was open 24 hours a day.

I admittedly know nothing about this business. Perhaps our veteran readers can shed some light on Whirley.

The stretch of Route 75 between Spring and Elm streets currently contains a Valero station, a vacant lot, Springhill Suites Marriott and Dunkin Donuts. Here is a contemporary look at that segment of the road, courtesy of Google Maps.
