Route 5 Delays Expected, East Windsor Police Say

EAST WINDSOR, CT — Drivers on Route 5 should plan for delays Thursday morning as police take part in an annual Special Olympics fundraiser.

The East Windsor Police Department said it will again participate in the Connecticut Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

The local portion of the run is scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 4, according to police. The route will begin at the Enfield town line on Route 5 and end at the South Windsor town line on Route 5.

Police said drivers should expect traffic delays in the area during the event.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness event and grassroots fundraiser for Special Olympics, according to Special Olympics. The organization said the event includes year-round fundraisers such as Penguin Plunge, Tip-A-Cop and Coin Drop events.

Each June, a three-day Torch Run is held before the Special Olympics Summer Games. Law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes, known as Guardians of the Flame, carry the Flame of Hope into opening ceremonies for local, state, national and world games.

The event is meant to highlight the connection between law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes while raising money and awareness for the organization.
