BROAD BROOK, CT — Authorities in East Windsor have identified the woman found dead after a fire ravaged a multi-family house on Church Street.

She was identified as 56-year-old Bernice Tompkins.

The fire was reported at 7:26 p.m. at 5 Church St. in East Windsor's Broad Brook section. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire, but were hampered by high winds and a considerable amount of clutter in the building, Broad Brook Assistant Fire Chief Gerald Bancroft said.

The difficult conditions required 25 to 35 minutes to bring the fire under control. Eight residents were displaced by the fire, and were being assisted by the American Red Cross, Bancroft said.
