MIDDLEBURY, CT — Middlebury lays out early voting at the Shepardson Community Center starting Oct. 19, Woodbury's library hosts a poetry open mic, and Middlebury seniors can get free hearing screenings and a stroke-prevention talk.
Here are five things to know about life around Woodbury and Middlebury this week:
1. Middlebury Early Voting Starts Oct. 19 At Shepardson
When: Oct. 19 to Nov. 1, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 27 and 29)
Where: Shepardson Community Center, Room 5, 1172 Whittemore Road, Middlebury
What to know: Early voting and same-day registration will be at the Shepardson Community Center, according to the Town Clerk's warning of the Nov. 3 election. Absentee ballots have been available since Oct. 2. On Election Day, District 1 votes downstairs and District 2 upstairs at Shepardson, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The ballot includes governor and lieutenant governor, Congress, the state legislature, the statewide offices, probate judge and registrar of voters.

2. Poetry Open Mic Night At Woodbury Library
When: Wednesday, Oct. 14, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Where: Gallery Space, Woodbury Public Library, 269 Main St. South, Woodbury
What to know: Woodbury Poet Laureate Katie Baker hosts an open mic for original or favorite poetry, with the theme "Destiny," according to the library. Themes are optional, and listeners are welcome; it's for adults and teens.

When: Thursday, Oct. 15, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Where: Shepardson Community Center, 1172 Whittemore Road, Middlebury
What to know: A specialist from Hearing Life in Southbury will offer free hearing screenings, according to the town calendar. Registration is required.
