WOODBURY, CT — A home on Upper Grassy Hill Road sustained "significant'" damage from a fire early Tuesday morning, but the homeowner was able to escape unharmed, fire officials said.
The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, at 191 Upper Grassy Hill Road, around 3:43 a.m.
When they arrived, the homeowner had already gotten out safely, and was with neighbors.
Firefighters encountered heavy fire on the right front side of the ranch-style residence, with flames extending through the attic space along much of the home's length, according to the department.
After the fire was extinguished, the Woodbury Fire Marshal's Office remained on scene to conduct an investigation into the fire's cause. Investigators cleared the scene around 9:42 a.m. The investigation is ongoing.
The property has been turned back over to the homeowner for securing and boarding up, officials said.
"Although the home sustained significant damage, the quick actions of the homeowner and neighbors in reporting the fire contributed to a rapid emergency response," the fire department said.
Firefighters from several other agencies provided assistance, including from Roxbury, Southbury, Bethlehem, Washington and Middlebury.
Ambulance personnel from Woodbury, Roxbury and Bethlehem also responded. Connecticut State Police and the American Red Cross of Connecticut were also on scene.
