Bomb Squad, K-9 Called to Middlebury for Suspicious Canister

The following is a report from the Middlebury Police Department.

On 07/24/11 at approximately 11:36 Middlebury Police received information from a town resident, Chris McGuire that there was a suspicious green box sitting on top off a wooden bridge on one of the trails which goes around Lake Elise in Middlebury off of Long Meadow Road Ext..

Police responded and found a military green ammo can sitting on top of one of the wooden foot bridges.

Playing on the side of caution, police contacted the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad for a Bomb Sniffing Dog. Due to the fact that it was a ammo can, a K-9 may give a false alert because there could be traces of gun powder in the box.

The Connecticut State Police sent a bomb robot to the scene. The box was x-rayed and determined that this can contained a scavenger hunt puzzle inside. These scavenger hunt puzzles are usually in plastic containers, not Military Ammo Cans. The scene was secured at 13:35.

A portion of the green way walking path was closed to pedestrian traffic until this ammo can was cleared. Sgt. Desmarais, Officer Blick, and Officer Demers investigated this incident.
