WOODBURY/MIDDLEBURY, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Wittenberg's Spring 2018 Dean's List
Amy Gilligan (Music major), of Woodbury (06798), was named to Wittenberg University's Spring 2018 Dean's List. Gilligan was among more than 400 students named to the Spring 2018 Dean's List. To qualify, students must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Eastern Student Charles Baywood of Woodbury Provides Tax Assistance to Lower-Income Families
Thirty student interns and volunteers from Eastern Connecticut State University participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program this past spring, serving 1,317 people who received $2,934,056 in refunds and credits. Among the volunteers was Charles Baywood '19 of Woodbury, who majors in Accounting.
VITA volunteers are IRS-certified and provide free tax-preperation and submission services to lower-income families and individuals.

Eastern's accounting program has worked with VITA for 20 years. "Our students run the program and provide all the time and effort," said Accounting Professor Mohd RuJoub, who brought the program to Eastern in 1998 when he joined the faculty. "They invest thousands of hours in the program yearly."
VITA's tax services were available from Jan. 24 to April 17, 2018, to individuals and families with incomes up to $54,000 at 24 VITA sites in the Greater Hartford and Windham regions and five VITA sites in New Britain.
Eastern students primarily served at Windham Heights in Willimantic, the Putnam Public Library, Community Renewal Team, Inc. in Hartford, Manchester Community College and the Stafford Public Library.
"This amazing opportunity allows our students to gain valuable experience and IRS tax certification, as well as the skills to communicate with clients and interact with a variety of people from all walks of life," said RuJoub. "We plan to participate in this marvelous program for many years to come."
The organizations that oversee VITA and train volunteers in northeastern Connecticut include United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, The Village, and the Human Resources Agency of New Britain.
Overall, the region's 500 VITA volunteers contributed 35,500 hours of volunteer time, with an estimated value of $1 million.

Middlebury resident graduates from James Madison University
James Madison University is pleased to announce the following students who graduated during the May 4, 2018 commencement exercises. Paige Elizabeth Rushton of Middlebury, CT graduated with a degree in Studio Art from James Madison University during the May 4, 2018 commencement exercises. Rushton was among more than 4,400 students who received undergraduate, master's, educational specialist and doctoral degrees.

Union College
Nearly 500 students graduated from Union College on Sunday, June 17 during the College's 224th Commencement exercises.

Western New England University congratulates more than 700 students who received their academic degrees.

Yuri Gulak of Woodbury (06798) graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering/Mechatronics Concentration.
Summer Harrison of Woodbury (06798) graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Studies.
Courtney Tani of Middlebury (06762) graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering.

Emmanuel College Celebrates 96th Commencement Exercises
Emmanuel College in Boston celebrated its 96th Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 12, 2018, adding hundreds of graduates to the global network of Emmanuel alumni who are making their mark on the world. Nationally-recognized sports journalist, author and television broadcaster Jackie MacMullan delivered the Commencement address and received an honorary degree. The College also conferred honorary degrees on Charles F. Monahan Jr., president of MCPHS University, and Sister Mary Alice McCabe, SNDdeN, who has dedicated her life to serving others in Brazil and Nicaragua. While touching on current issues such as the #MeToo movement and immigration, speakers delivered messages of courage and determination in the face of adversity. The College conferred degrees on the following local students:
Christopher Cutrali of Middlebury (06762) received a Bachelor of Arts in Writing, Editing & Publishing.
Robert Tzepos of Middlebury (06762) received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.

Roger Williams University Announces Spring 2018 Dean's List
Select students have been named to the Spring 2018 Dean's List at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. Full-time students who complete 12 or more credits per semester and earn a GPA of 3.4 or higher are placed on the Dean's List that semester.

Bryant University Celebrates Class of 2018
Inspired to excel, 788 members of Bryant University's Class of 2018 were awarded a Bryant degree at the University's 155th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18. Graduates will join a powerful, network of 45,000 alumni who have distinguished themselves as leaders in their organizations and communities around the world.
