De Cortin and Kapstein set Objectives for Education Board

Election is Tuesday June 30 from 6am to 8pm with safe distance rules

Ed De Cortin Jonathan Kapstein

Statement from Ed De Cortin

I am Ed De Cortin, and I’m running for re-election to the Region 14 Board of Education.

The Region’s Board functions as a cohesive unit with one goal in mind: to provide the best education outcomes for students and families in the most cost-efficient way.

The Board is able to reach those goals because it has an open and steady dialogue with the administration and town leaders. Student achievement is our core value and central goal.

I have three goals:

  1. Improve communication with the public—The public needs to know everything they can know about Board of Education priorities, policies, challenges, and limitations. Critical to building on current successes is more engagement from PTOs and students; the board can provide tools to facilitate those conversations.
  2. Improve cost efficiency—Identify costs that can be reduced so funds can be redirected to student needs. Identify costs under state control that threaten student outcomes.
  3. Leverage our agricultural sciences program—We are witnessing a paradigm shift in the way people feed themselves. We have the tools to teach students how to grow the food they and their communities will need, regardless of where they “farm”.

The last year working with the Board, meeting more students, hearing more voices and considering those views has largely been a satisfying experience. There are challenges, but also opportunities that match my skills, experience, and relationships. You who put your trust in me in 2019 opened a door for me and I’d like to work for you again.

Statement from Jon Kapstein

Dear fellow Americans and voters-- I ask for voter support on June 30 in Woodbury and Bethlehem. My name is Jon Kapstein, and I am the only candidate for the Region 14 Board of Education with endorsements from both the Woodbury Democratic and Republican Town Committees, I believe I am the solid choice.

These are difficult times, and what is best for children is squeezed by the shutdown and the stress it has imposed on students, teachers, and administrators. My worldview and lifelong commitment to education can help us navigate the perilous shoals.

My wife and I moved to Woodbury four years ago and we have made a determined effort to be part of the community. I promptly joined the volunteer fire department and am the public information officer. Prior to that my career was as an international journalist on four continents and then corporate positions in Europe and Africa for US companies. I served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy. Originally from Rhode Island, I hold degrees from Brown and Columbia.

I bring a wide worldview to education and am convinced that the strength of American schooling is teaching students how to think whether they are college-bound, deciding to join the military, preparing for trades and artisanship or farming. My wife and I also have a strong commitment to Vo-Ag based on our own timberland in Upstate New York.

Please vote for me on June 30. The distancing plan will make it safe and easy. Thanks, Jon Kapstein
