Fight Brewing Between Republicans And Middlebury Board Of Ed Members: Report

The rift is over the proposed Region 15 school budget for next year, which carries an increase of less than 1 percent.

MIDDLEBURY, CT — Middlebury's Republican Town Committee is directing its Region 15 Board of Education members to vote against any school budget increase for next year, an order that is not sitting well with those members, reports the Waterbury Republican-American.

Those four members, Paul Babarik, Brenda Carter, John Cookson and Richard Spierto, have vowed to ignore any directive and vote their conscience on the budget, which is currently proposed at $67.4 million for 2017-18. The proposed spending plan carries an increase of less than 1 percent.

Region 15 encompasses Middlebury and Southbury, and the Middlebury RTC reportedly made its recommendation based on declining enrollment and past budget increases. The committee believes those increases have been excessive over the past decade.
