Historic Diner Making A Comeback In Torrington

A group of preservationists is hard at work to bring back an iconic eatery.

TORRINGTON, CT — An iconic diner may be returning to Torrington, according to The Republican-American. Skee's Diner remained at its original site for more than 70 years before it was removed eight years ago and taken to a warehouse a few miles away.

Since then, a group of preservationists has been hard at work to restore the building. A new home for Skee's could be a small vacant lot adjacent to Christmas Village that the city bought in 2018.

The Torrington Historic Preservation Trust voted to partner with the city to include Skee's Diner as part of a revitalization project. The city is applying for a $5.6 million Communities Challenge grant to revitalize the site, which was once home to Torrington's train station, according to The Republican American.

Plans call for the diner, which still has original furnishings from the 1940s, to "serve food in some fashion."

A Facebook page for the project reads: "The Torrington Historic Preservation Trust has embarked on this project to preserve Historic Skee's Diner, with our main objectives to restore, relocate and reopen the diner to the public as a restaurant."
