Letter: Merry Christmas Sign in Woodbury Transportation-Related [OPINION]

On a Green in Woodbury, a Merry Christmas sign was removed by the state after the town received a complaint.

To the Editor:

Earlier this week, the State of Connecticut made a decision that a Merry Christmas sign be removed from the state-owned Green in Woodbury after a complaint from a non-Christian who was offended by it.

First Selectman Bill Butterly, while sympathetic, explained that only transportation related signs can be placed on the Green. All others can be removed if a complaint is made.

Whoever made the decision to remove it obviously never watched Miracle on 34th Street, where they proved the existence of Santa Claus, who transports his presents to millions of children by sleigh pulled by reindeer every Christmas Eve.

By removing the sign, the State of Connecticut may inadvertently have disappointed many children expecting Santa to arrive on his sleigh, just to appease one ‘Scroogey’ non-believer. If the belief in Santa Claus exists in the minds of children, the belief that he TRANSPORTS the gifts by sleigh is definitely part of the Christmas Spirit. Now we have some explaining to do to our children and grandchildren...
