Mail Thefts Prompt Police To Issue Warning In Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, CT — Police are warning residents following recent thefts from mailboxes across town.

"Mail theft can lead to identity theft and financial fraud," police wrote in a Facebook post. "Taking a few extra precautions can go a long way in keeping your personal information safe."

Police provided the following advice for residents:

• Pick up your mail promptly after delivery
• If you’re away, place your mail on hold or ask a trusted neighbor to collect it
• Send outgoing mail from your local Post Office or a secure USPS collection box whenever possible
• Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery to monitor incoming mail
• Shred documents containing personal or financial information before disposing of them
