Nine Westover students were presented with a dozen awards – including five Gold Key Awards, the highest honors – at the 25th annual Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Award competition.
Four seniors received Gold Key Awards for their photography portfolios: Catherine Caroe of Woodbury; Anna Chahuneau of Paris, France; Stephanie Crudele of Middlebury; and Amy Tiong of Waterbury. Photography teacher Caleb Portfolio is their instructor. Joscelyn Norris, a sophomore from Roxbury, received a Gold Key Award for a found object sculpture dress she created; her teacher was Sara Poskas. The five students’ work will now be entered in the national Scholastic Art Award competition.
In addition to her Gold Key Award, Ms. Norris received an honorable mention for a hand drawing.

Two students received Silver Key Awards: senior Kira Hunter of Virginia for a ceramic figurative piece of a woman leaning and sophomore Sharon Jeon of Kangnam-Gu, South Korea, for a painting entitled “Synchronize.” Ms. Poskas was Ms. Hunter’s instructor and Leeah Joo was Ms. Jeon’s instructor.
The following students received Honorable Mention recognition for their works of art: Ms. Hunter for a ceramic figurative piece of a woman with her hands behind her back; Ms. Jeon for a painting entitled “Still Life: Colorful Beads”; junior Jessica You of Shanghai, China, for a still life drawing of a skull and flowers; and junior Rachael Shurberg of Morris for a photograph entitled “Accepting.” Ms. Poskas was Ms. Hunter’s instructor, Ms. Joo was Ms. You’s instructor, and Portfolio was Ms. Morris’s instructor.

The Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards is the largest juried student art exhibition in the state. This year’s exhibition featured works of art from 130 participating Connecticut schools. Selected from over 1,500 total art entries, 623 works were accepted for exhibit at the University of Hartford. From that accepted number, there were 182 Gold Key awards (including 40 Gold portfolios), 152 Silver Keys, and 289 Honorable Mention awards granted.
Westover is a selective boarding and day school in Middlebury, Connecticut, with 205 students in grades 9-12 from 17 states and 20 countries. The School offers its students more than 20 Advanced Placement courses as well as signature programs in science, engineering, art history, and music.
