Scam Targets Woodbury Town Officials for $80,000: Report

It started with what turned out to be a fake email to the town's accounting manager.

WOODBURY, CT — Quick-thinking Woodbury officials helped thwart a recent scam where the town was nearly ripped off for $80,000, reports the Waterbury Republican-American.

It started with what turned out to be a fake email to accounting manager Denise Weik that asked her transfer the large sum of money.

After replying to email with questions, and then looking closely at the return digital correspondence, town officials saw that names and other facts were incorrect, and they notified the Woodbury police.
