Selectmen Propose Making Park Road in Woodbury a One-Way Street to Address Safety Issues

The idea is being proposed in response to residents complaining about truck traffic on the road.

First Selectman William J. Butterly has proposed making Park Road a one-way street from the Cannon Green to Bacon Pond Road, the Republican-American reports.

Butterly proposed the idea in response to complaints from Park Road residents about truck traffic on the streets. Residents, who are worried about damage to the roadways and trucks crossing the yellow center lines while negotiating curves, hoped for the selectmen to install a “No Thru Trucks” sign at Park Road and Main Street South. Butterly told the paper that would mean the trucks going to O&G Industries Quarry on Park Road would drive to Old Sherman Hill Road and Bacon Pond Road around turns that would inevitably make them cross into the opposite lane, posing a greater safety risk.

According to the paper, Butterly met on Monday with Park Road residents, a Main Street merchant, O&G Industries representative Ken Faroni and Zoning Commission member Ted Tietz, an experienced truck driver on the town’s roads.

Faroni told the paper, making the road one-way wouldn’t change the quarry’s current traffic pattern while making the roads safer.

The added safety would come at the cost of convenience. Faroni told the paper residents on the lower portion of Park Road could use Orenaug Avenue to reach Main Street South while residents who live further west on Park Road or on Joshua Hill Road would need to use Old Sherman Hill Road or White Deer Rocks Road to get to Route 6.

The idea will be presented to affected residents in a letter next week.
