Service Learning Project at Long Meadow Elementary School

The students independently planned the service project, which involved identifying what was needed and writing to businesses for donations.

From Region 15 Schools:Students in Dr. Sue Shaw’s fifth grade class at Long Meadow Elementary School in Middlebury, CT, made 545 sandwiches for the Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministry Soup Kitchen in June. The students independently planned the service project, which involved identifying what and how many supplies were necessary, writing local businesses to ask for donations, researching why this was a need in the community, and how to execute their project.

The following local businesses donated supplies and/or gift cards: Stop and Shop, Shop Rite, Boars Head Valley Provisions, Patty’s Pantry, Southford Deli, Southbury Kitchen, and Dinova’s Four Corners Store donated items.

“It was an awesome project because we were able to get donations and help think about others and make an impact,” said Thomas Dawson, 5th grade student. This project was one of many events aligned with Long Meadow’s mission to provide service-learning opportunities to create a lasting legacy of charitable acts in recognition of the school’s 20 th anniversary. Throughout the 2017-18 school year, teachers, parents, administrators and students have developed and expanded service-learning projects to create meaningful community service opportunities. The service projects integrate instruction and reflection, enrich learning, teach civic responsibility and engagement, and strengthen community. The projects are aligned with the Region 15 district-approved goals that are commonly referred to as the 6Cs, specifically: Character, Collaboration, and Global Citizenship.
