Southbury, Middlebury Students Math Test Scores Rise But Some Officials Concerned: Report

Math scores rose significantly at the lower grades but not as much in the higher grades, according to a report.

SOUTHBURY, CT — Southbury and Middlebury third-graders obtained 83 percent proficiency in math on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Test this year after the Bridges Math program was instituted last year.

The same program was implemented for fourth and fifth graders this year and 66 and 63 percent of those students were proficient in math, the Republican-American reports.

Proficiency among sixth-graders in math was 50 percent, 62 for seven-graders and 70 percent for eighth-graders, the Rep-Am reports.

According to the Rep-Am some board members expressed concerns over the numbers at the higher grades but administrators cautioned that the program is new and it may take time for students to get comfortable with it. And overall math scores did increase, officials noted.
