Suspicious Behavior in Middlebury Causes Police to Urge Residents to Be Vigilant

After three separate suspicious incidents in town on Monday, Jan. 9, police are asking residents to call them immediately if they see anything or anyone that acts suspiciously.

Three times today - Monday, Jan. 9 - residents in Middlebury called police about suspicious vehicles or persons at their homes, Middlebury Police Department Lt. Richard Wildman reported in a press release.

This afternoon, a White Deer Rock Road resident reported a suspicious vehicle, possible a green Ford SUV in the driveway, and confronted someone on the side of the house.

The person stated he was looking for a Charcoal Avenue home. Later in the afternoon, a resident encountered a blue pick-up truck in the driveway of a Tranquility Road home and when confronting a person in the yard, they said they were looking for a different house number than the one they were near.

A Porter Avenue couple reported someone knocked on their door asking if they wanted the windows washed, and then left on foot.

In 9 out of 10 cases, most these stories check out, however these are also tactics used by burglars to see if anyone is home and when they are confronted they come up with excuses like these, Lt. Wildman stated.

Last week, police responded to a evening call of someone on the lower end of Whittemore Road near Porter Avenue, who had someone knock on the front door and then the person went to the back door and when confronted, stated he was looking for the center of town.

The Middlebury Police are urging residents to call the department at 203-577-4028.

"The Middlebury Police would rather you call them at 203-577-4028 and find it is nothing rather than have something happen," said Lt. Wildman.
