May is for mothers, and The Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists celebrates with special events at The Greenwich Garden Education Center in Cos Cob beginning May 5. Tribute to Mothers: A Springtime Portrait Exhibition features 30 fine art portraits by select artists, free demonstrations, public reception, and a Master Workshop. COSPA President and Portrait Society of America CT Ambassador Jeanine Jackson says, "This is big. To our knowledge, there has never been a portrait exhibition dedicated to the women who dedicate so much of themselves to their families."
The portraits include a variety of styles from classic to contemporary in drawings, pastels, and oils.

Opening festivities begin on May 5 -the Thursday before Mothers' Day - from 3pm-6pm with live portrait demonstrations by two award-winning artists and teachers: Grace DeVito (CSOPA Faculty) and Joel Spector (CSOPA Director of Education). Anyone can attend all or part of this free event. The painters present two distinct approaches to an artistic tradition dating back to the Hellenic era, made popular during the Renaissance, and resurging today in private homes, businesses, and government buildings. CSOPA Events Director, Michel Delafontaine, expects some people will show up for "the start" and return for "the finish" of the demos just prior to the public reception that follows from 6pm-8pm with exhibiting artists, refreshments, and entertainment.
In conjunction with Tribute to Mothers, an international portrait celebrity comes to Greenwich. David Jon Kassan conducts a Master Portrait Demonstration on May 21, from 10am - 5pm. Advanced techniques and his patented Parallel Palette are of particular interest to professional painters, teachers, and collectors. Space limited. Preregistration is required: $150pp/$120 students under 21. (csopa.org)
The exhibition remains on view May 5 - 26 at the Garden Education Center, 130 Bible Street, Cos Cob.
