Troopers Solve Mystery Of ‘Gunshot’ Sounds In Woodbury

WOODBURY, CT — Loud popping sounds prompted multiple residents to contact police about gunfire on Wednesday.

Police looked into it, and concluded the popping sounds came from something mechanical - just not from any guns.

The Woodbury Resident Trooper’s Office on Sept. 2 was made aware of a Facebook post claiming someone was driving in town and shooting at houses and possibly a dog, police said.

Woodbury officers and state troopers were able to locate the witness.

Police conducted a neighborhood canvass and used a state police K9 trained to find shell casings.

“No evidence was obtained to suggest someone was driving and shooting from a vehicle,” police said.

Around the same time, police received two other calls reporting the sound of gunshots in different areas of town. Police responded quickly to those areas. Again, they found nothing.

“Based on the investigation it is believed the sounds were from an older model truck that had driven through town and would make a popping sound, which could have been construed as a gunshot,” police said.
