Updated: State Police Call SHS Baseball Incident in Middlebury 'Very Minor'

Three Players Issued Infractions For Creating A Public Disturbance.

State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance called an incident involving three Stonington High School baseball players who allegedly exposed themselves to another motorist a “very, very minor incident.”

The three players, all of whom are juveniles, were aboard a team bus Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 84 near exit 15 at the Middlebury and Southbury town lines. The team was on Interstate 84 traveling to the Class M State championships when the three teens allegedly made inappropriate gestures including exposing themselves to a motorist.

State Trooper First Class Kick of Troop A in Southbury said at least one motorist called to complain about the behavior of three players and wanted to pursue the complaint. According to Kick, who said he took the complaint from one motorist, the bus was stopped by police just off exit 15 in Middlebury.

Vance said Friday that he believed only one motorist complained, but that he didn’t know if there were more phone calls.

While, on Thursday the state police said the three juveniles would have to appear in court, a statement Patch published, Vance said “it was up to the prosecutors and parents to work it out,” and that the three “ do not have to appear in court.”

According to Vance the three were issued infractions for creating a public disturbance. Tthe State of Connecticut Judicial Branch website states that when an issued an infraction an individual may choose to pay a fine by mail or plead not guilty, if the individual pleads not guilty they may have to appear in court.

The names of the three students have not been released.

“I cannot stress enough this was a very minor incident,” Vance said.

The Stonington High School baseball team won its beating Noonewaug 7-6. The play St. Joseph in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Stonington High School's Senior Prom is Friday, June 3. It is not clear if the students will face punishments from the school.

Superintendent Leanne Masterjoseph said she could not make any comments about situations involving individual students, and calls to Stonington High School Principal Dr. Stephen Murphy were not returned.
