"The portrait “In loving memory of Eric Sebastian Marsden” was another response to my call for subjects this past Spring. Pat Marsden, the Mother of Eric, became aware of my work through a talented young artist, Maddie Blais, who studied in my teen art class. Pat asked if I would consider drawing her late child. This was an exceptional challenge as Eric passed away as a young child and the only references of him were small and out of focus. Of even greater challenge, there were only a few fading photographs spanning his precious young years - showing his visage at different stages of development. I wondered to myself if I could find Eric with my charcoals.... After working closely with the family they shared that the finished portrait of Eric captured him perfectly and has brought peace and closure for them. The response was overwhelming and deeply moving. They are thrilled with the happy and joyful expression caught with charcoals– something that all of their old photographs combined were never able to provide. This portrait brought to my attention that it is often unimaginable what a single work of art could mean to another." ShawnaLee
