Active aging classes designed to keep seniors physically and mentally fit
The Watermark at East Hill is pleased to announce its Watermark University Fall 2014 semester is now underway, with course catalogs available to seniors living in the Greater Southbury area. Watermark University is a continuing education program that features diverse topics and programs designed to keep seniors’ minds and bodies fit. Courses are held at the senior-living community, located at 611 East Hill Road in Southbury.
“At The Watermark, we encourage our residents to continue to participate in programs they love, while also giving them the option to try something new and different,” said Melody Floyd, Community Life Director at The Watermark at East Hill. “Our Watermark University Fall course catalog includes topics and programs ranging from food and history to physical health and educational discussions – a wide variety with something for everyone.”
One new Watermark University course, “The American Political Tradition,” will address the changing political climate in the United States. Dr. Alfred Hunt, Professor Emeritus of History at the State University of New York, will lead the three-part discussion series covering political culture, domestic politics and foreign affairs. Each discussion will be held at 2:00 at The Watermark on Tuesday, September 23, Tuesday, October 14, and Tuesday, November 11.

“I’ll Knock a Homer For You,” a documentary on baseball legend Babe Ruth and the 1926 World Series, is open to the public and will be held on Saturday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m. The documentary explores Ruth’s 1926 World Series performance where he promised to hit a home run for Johnny Sylvester, a young die-hard Yankees fan whose father reached out to the team after his son suffered a traumatic brain injury. After a shaky start to the World Series, Ruth fulfilled his promise, and the story went on to become an American pop culture legend. Director Andrew Lilley and Sylvester’s great-nephew will be on-hand to present the documentary, and answer questions.
Watermark University will also offer a support group, “Into the Depths of Grief,” on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. Led by Karen E. Anderson, an art therapist specializing in imagery and creative expression, participants will explore grief in its various stages and different coping strategies to help them through the grieving process. The course will provide attendees with a more thorough understanding of the health risks associated with repressing emotions related to grief, as well as share exercises to express their grief.
