Woodbury Firefighters Pull Off Purr-Fect Rescue, Free Kitten Trapped In Chimney

WOODBURY, CT — It wasn’t a call for flames or smoke that brought out the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department this week — it was fur.

Firefighters were dispatched Monday evening on a very special mission after reports of a kitten stuck in a chimney. When Chief Janet Morgan arrived, she peered down to find a tiny puff of white fur about six and a half feet below. At first glance, it looked like a simple “open the clean-out and scoop” rescue. It wasn’t.

The home’s fireplace had long been abandoned, and the basement had since been finished — complete with sheetrock and spray-foam insulation blocking access. After taking measurements and carefully removing the walls, firefighters finally reached the clean-out. But when they opened it, the kitten was nowhere to be found.

Peering through the fireplace again, they could still see the little feline. That meant there had to be another hidden clean-out. Sure enough, after removing more wall and insulation, firefighters uncovered a second access point. Moments later — as captured in a now-viral video — they freed the wide-eyed kitten, safe and sound.

The rescue ended with licks and smiles all around as the kitten was reunited with a young girl who had been anxiously waiting nearby. The kitten, according to firefighters, seemed entirely unfazed by its adventure.

“Neighbors helping neighbors — it’s what we do,” the department shared. “And tonight, it brought a little joy to everyone involved.”
