Woodbury Firefighters 'Water the Sprouts'

Kids Dance Through Firetruck Spray Marking End of Summer Camp

Woodbury Volunteer Firefighters call it ‘Watering the Sprouts.’ The decade-old tradition marks the end of the town’s summer camp with kids dancing through the spray from a firetruck water turret. On a hot sunny July 31st, nearly 50 children enjoyed a noontime run through 1200 gallons of water arcing over them from Engine 8 at Hollow Park under the direction of Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan and town Parks & Recreation Director Graham Musson. Afterwards they lined up with 11 counselors, a handful of firefighters, and town officials Standing at center back in a green shirt and wearing sunglasses is First Selectman Paul Zulpa. Next to him at left also in a green polo shirt is Mr. Musson. Sensibly, they both stayed away from the water flow and remained dry.Engine 8 is a Woodbury Fire Department workhorse carrying 2500 gallons with hoses of different diameters. The truck’s primary use is in battling structure fires. “This was both community service and fun,” said Chief Morgan adding, “It’s a cheerful break from the 230 call-outs we’ve had since January 1st.###
