Woodbury Lions Club Honors Members for Outstanding Achievements

Frank Longo takes home 'Lion of the Year' award.

On Tuesday night at the Painted Pony in Bethlehem, the Woodbury Lions Club held their annual awards dinner honoring its members achievements. Lion Gary Greenstein presented Lions William Barthelmess and Thomas Story with certificates for helping to grow the ranks of Lionism, each bringing two new members to the club. Paul DeRienze was inducted into the club by Lions Frank Shepard and James Trompeter.

Lion Karl Lindahl recognized members for years of service to the club: Lions Larry Powers and Robert Gorbett for five years of service, Lions Michael Cunningham and Jeffery Baywood for ten years, Lion Peter Romanos for fifteen years of service, Lion Phil Doran for twenty-five years, Lion Peter Perkinson for thirty years, Lion Garry Mitchell for fifty years and Lion John Deschino for fifty-five years of service to the Lions.

Lion President Russell Domareck introduced the past presidents of the seventy-five year-old club, of which eighteen were in attendance. He then presented the “Lion of the Year” award to Lion Frank Longo for his extensive involvement in club events for the past year.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious “Melvin Jones Fellowship Award”. The honor, named for the founder of Lions International, goes to an individual who illustrates a significant commitment to humanitarian service. This year, Lions Frank Shepard and Edward Grudzien presented the award to Lion David Ahouse.

Founded in 1936, the Woodbury Lions Club primary mission is to bring together service-minded people for philanthropic endeavors in their their community through fund raising and projects conducted throughout the year. The Woodbury Lions supports sight and hearing related causes, collects used eyeglasses for those in need, helps support the Lions Eye Research Center at Yale University and provides local sight and hearing screenings at various time throughout the year. In 1992, the Woodbury Lions Club Foundation was established to provide scholarships to local students; over $144,000 has been given out in the past ten years alone.
