Woodbury Residents Invited to Submit Home Fire Escape Plan
Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan Opens a Safety Program

The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department invites town families to create and submit a home emergency escape plan, says Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan. Residents can draw a floorplan or map their residence and show an exit strategy in case of fire or emergency.
The escape plan can be submitted via the department’s Facebook page or dropped in an outside box at department headquarters, 25 Quassuk Rd., Woodbury.

“After the covid-19 health emergency measures are eased, we will pick out a few examples and arrange a drill at the homes,” Chief Morgan said in publicizing the initiative. The plan can be black-and-white or colored with pictures. There is no format or formal layout. “Do whatever is comfortable,” she said.

Woodbury firefighters have responded to 30 calls since the start of the corona virus emergency, Chief Morgan said. Most have been smoke-alarms for an minor cause. There have been no major structural fires and a small number of motor vehicle accidents. “I don’t want to jinx it, but things have been quiet,” she added. “A year ago the call-out volume was 50 pc higher with 45 runs in the same time period.”
She noted that under the department’s covid-19 safety protocol, firefighters drive to a scene but ordered to stay isolated in their own vehicles until summoned individually to bolster a team dealing with a fire or rescue scene. “We want to have a strong, uninfected reserve always available,” Chief Morgan said. She emphasized that there has been no cutback in personnel or reaction time in dealing with emergency call-outs. “Our goal always is save lives,” the chief said.
