Mayor Mike Purzycki, Police Chief Robert J. Tracy and Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz invite citizens to attend Wilmington’s annual National Night Out event tonight, Tuesday, October 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Rodney Square. National Night Out is a community-based event that mobilizes citizens locally and around the country to promote public safety, police-community partnerships, safer communities and appreciation for police, fire, and emergency first-responders.

“National Night Out is a great chance for our residents to meet some of the men and women who help keep their community safe,” said Chief Tracy. “We are looking forward to a great community event this year, which is poised to be the largest-ever National Night Out with more partners joining us than in years past.”

In addition to offering children and families the opportunity to interact with Wilmington’s first responders and view police, fire, and other emergency vehicles and equipment, the event will again feature FREE food and refreshments thanks to the continued generous support of long-standing Wilmington businesses Grotto Pizza and Bernie’s Original Water Ice. In addition, parents will be able to obtain free identification cards for their children. COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, in addition to flu shots, will be available as well.

National Night Out attendees will have the chance to meet and interact with police officers from various Wilmington Police Department (WPD) divisions and units, including the Crisis Management Tactical Team, Traffic Unit, Marine Unit, Mobile Command Post, Victim Services Unit, Youth Response Unit, Special Operations Division, and the Uniformed Services (Patrol) Division. Officers from the WPD Canine Unit will also be on hand to conduct demonstrations and enable attendees to meet and interact with some of the unit’s dogs.

Of particular importance this year will be the participation of WPD’s Human Resources Division/Recruitment Team, which will have information and applications available for the 101st Wilmington Police Academy. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, October 12, 2021.

The WPD will be joined by other law enforcement and public safety partners at the City, County, State, and Federal levels, as well as the private sector. These include:
