The annual New Castle County Science Fair is an event that many science-loving high school students look forward to each year. While the fair looked different this year and was held in a virtual format due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it still fostered scientific application and awarded cash prices to many aspiring young scientists.

Thanks to generous sponsorships, the College was able to use unspent funds from the 2021 New Castle County Science Fair to develop a Summer Science Academy for previous science fair participants. Seven students ages 13 to 16 participated in this weeklong camp at the Stanton campus in Newark at no cost.

The students were taught by PhD scientist Dr. Kelly Palasia, a former Dupont scientist who now teaches at Appoquinimink High School. The students were exposed to fun science with all activities having a hands-on component. Participants explored genetics, neuroscience, forensics, and engineering. Some examples of their activities included gene editing, blood spatter analysis, and designing/building their own water filtration system. The blood spatter analysis took them outdoors to a “crime scene” where they analyzed the staged event.
