University of Delaware Golf team competes at Elon Invitational

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The University of Delaware men’s golf team fired a 296 score on Tuesday to finish in 13th place at the Elon Phoenix Invitational.

The Blue Hens, who posted 293 and 288 rounds on Monday, placed 13th out of 16 teams with a three-round total of 877. Elon captured the team title with an 841 score, followed by Gardner-Webb at 845 and George Washington at 854.

UD senior Kieran Purcell tied for 14th place in the individual standings, finishing the tournament with an even par 70-71-72-213 score on the par 71, 6,867-yard Alamance Country Club course. Purcell birdied the fifth, sixth,12th and 16th holes in the third round on Tuesday, while his three-round score tied for the lowest of his career.

Blaine Lafferty fired the lowest round of the day by a Blue Hen with an even par 71, tying for 40th place with a six over par 77-71-71-219. Jack Gianniny, who shot a 75 on Tuesday, carded a 12 over par 78-72-75-225 to tie for 66th place.

Christian Chapman scored a 14 over par 75-74-78-227 to tie for 76th place, while Jack Melville tied for 80th place with a 16 over par 71-79-79-229.

Dylan MacQueen of Western Carolina was the tournament medalist by finishing at 13 under par, while Brendan MacDougall of High Point finished five shots back.

Delaware closes its fall season on Oct. 22-24 when the Blue Hens compete in the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Invitational at Kilmarlic Golf Course in Powells Point, N.C.
