NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer battled to the end Thursday night, but an 83rd-minute goal from Elon’s Grace Bennett proved to be the difference as Delaware fell 2-1 Thursday at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
The Blue Hens (5-10-2, 2-7 CAA) overcame an early 1-0 deficit in the 62nd-minute when sophomore Jillian Vassallo buried a bouncing ball into the left-hand corner of the net. Elon (9-5-4, 2-3-3 CAA) originally took the early 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Sydney Schilling.

The Hens and Phoenix continued to battle until Elon scored the game-winner when Reena Wichmann flicked a cross that found Bennett, who fired a header past Kailyn Rekos.
Elon outshot Delaware 8-3, with both Rekos and Hanna Macaulay of Elon recording two saves. The Blue Hens close out the 2017 season this Sunday against James Madison. Kickoff from Grant Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
