This DC Spot Named Among Greatest Mexican Restaurants In U.S. By NYT

"There has never been a better time for Mexican food in the United States," the Times reported.

WASHINGTON, DC — A Washington restaurant made The New York Times' recent list of 41 of the greatest Mexican restaurants across the U.S.

"There has never been a better time for Mexican food in the United States," the Times reported. "A culinary renaissance over the last 15 years has expanded the American palate well beyond Tex-Mex, tacos and game-night nachos.

"Mexican and Mexican American chefs have brought their cooking, in all of its regionality and specificity, to nearly every corner of the country."

The one Washington restaurant included was Amparo Fondita, with the Times praising chef Irabién Christian's "painterly eye and impressive command of Mexico's vast palette of flavors and recipes."

"While Mr. Christian's kitchen operates at the cutting edge, his convivial restaurant functions as a place to drop into for a restorative bowl of brick-red pozole, or a round of margaritas and queso frito, which the menu helpfully describes as Oaxacan cheese curds," the Times reported.
