Child-Porn Suspect Who Shot, Killed Two FBI Agents Identified

SUNRISE, FL — The gunman who shot and killed two FBI agents while they were serving a federal search warrant in a child pornography investigation Tuesday has been identified as 55-year-old David Lee Huber, the FBI said in a news release.

Huber opened fire on the agents around 6 a.m. Tuesday when they went to his Sunrise home to serve a court-ordered search warrant for a violent crimes against children investigation, the FBI said. Five agents were struck by gunfire in the shootout.

Special Agent Daniel Alfin and Special Agent Laura Schwartzenberger were shot and killed in the line of duty, FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge George Piro said in a news release. Huber is also dead following a standoff.

Two other wounded agents were shot multiple times and taken to a local hospital, Piro said. Both have since been released. A fifth agent’s wounds were treated at the scene.

Executing search warrants is “an essential and important part of what we do and are thoroughly researched and meticulously planned to take into account any threats or dangers,” he said. “The vast majority of these warrants occur without incident.”

Piro commended Alfin and Schwartzenberger for their dedication to the FBI’s mission.

“It takes an incredibly special person to answer the call and do the heroic work of an FBI special agent. It requires self-sacrifice. It requires putting oneself in harm’s way, not once, but again and again,” he said. “Dan and Laura left home this morning to carry out the mission they signed up for and loved to do—to keep the American people safe. They were valuable members of our team. They will forever be heroes. We will always honor their ultimate sacrifice.”

Alfin, 36, was born in New York and first joined the FBI’s Albany office in 2009. He was reassigned to FBI Miami in 2017 and worked crimes against children violations for more than six years. He is survived by his wife and child.

Schwartzenberger, 43, was born in Pueblo, Colorado and first joined the FBI’s Albuquerque office in 2005. She was reassigned to FBI Miami in 2010 and worked crimes against children cases for more than seven years. She is survived by her husband and two children.
