Trader Joe’s is continuing to expand its footprint nationwide, opening six new stores and announcing plans for nine others, including in Florida.

Between early May and mid-June, the California-based grocery chain announced that stores had opened in West Palm Beach; New Orleans; Johns Creek, Georgia; Tucson; Woodinville, Washington; and McKinney, Texas, according to the company’s website.

Also in May, Trader Joe’s announced on its website that stores were “coming soon” to Sarasota; West Jordan, Utah; Phoenix; Yonkers, New York; Quincy, Massachusetts; Chicago; University Heights, Ohio; Syracuse, New York; and Farmington Hills, Michigan.

The West Palm Beach store opened June 12 at 8111 S. Dixie Highway and the Sarasota location is planned for 8199 S. Tamiami Trail, Unit 100.

As of mid-June, there are 656 Trader Joe’s stores in the U.S., according to data company ScrapeHero, up from 631 in February. Nearly a third of current Trader Joe's locations — 208 stores — are in the company’s home state of California, ScrapeHero reported.

When Trader Joe's chooses to open a new store, it takes into account population density and draw, site access, traffic patterns and parking, marketing executives Tara Miller and Matthew Sloan said in a 2024 episode of the Inside Trader Joe’s podcast, according to the episode transcript.

“This is very deliberate, and for us, what's important is that it's controlled growth,” Sloan said in the episode, according to the transcript. “We have to grow in a way that fits our business model.”
