Gabby Douglas Surprises Shoppers At Aventura Mall

The 21-year-old super athlete nonchalantly made her way past shoppers until she got to a stage that had been set up at Aventura Mall.

AVENTURA, FL — If you happened to be shopping at the Aventura Mall earlier this month and you brushed shoulders with a woman in a grey Nike hoodie, sunglasses and sweat pants, you very well might have been touched by greatness. Triple Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas was shooting a commercial at the Miami area shops on behalf of AT&T. The 21-year-old super athlete nonchalantly made her way past shoppers until she got to a stage that had been set up for her on the ground floor of the mall.

A voice came over a loudspeaker and Douglas' name flashed on an electronic sign: "Three-time Olympic medalist Gabby Douglas," the voice boomed, introducing the affable member of the 2012 "Fierce Five" and 2016 "Final Five" Team USA women's gymnastic squads. The Olympian cartwheeled her way into a surprise floor routine, which included a running leap. She even invited some onlookers to participate.

"The routine lasted about two minutes, but Gabby spent time afterward teaching kids how to do cartwheels and letting the kids show off their moves," AT&T's Kelly Starling told Patch.

A group of three faux judges held up placards to confirm that Douglas' put in a perfect 10 performance, something she has a history of doing.

At 16, she became the first African American to win gold in the women’s individual all-around event. She also brought home gold medals for Team USA in the team competitions of both the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.

Her June 1 visit to Aventura was part of a social media ad campaign that is an extension of AT&T’s “Terms & Conditions” TV ad campaign with Mark Wahlberg.

Keeping with the campaign's a theme of “your entertainment on your terms,” the social media campaign focuses on real-life scenarios where people can get a better sense of the meaning of "entertainment on your terms," Starling added.
