Miami Area High School Placed on Lockdown After Handgun Tip
Police detained four students at Miami Norland Senior High School.

MIAMI GARDENS — Acting on a tip, Miami-Dade Schools Police found a handgun in a parked car outside Miami Norland Senior High School on Tuesday.
The tip sent the facility into a lockdown, according to Daisy Gonzalez-Diego of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

"Miami-Dade Schools Police received a tip through the See Something Say Something program about a student in possession of a weapon," Gonzalez-Diego told Patch.

"After a thorough search of the school and its surroundings, they located a weapon inside a vehicle in the parking lot," she explained.

She said that four students were arrested and were being charged with possession of a weapon on school property and possession of a weapon by a minor.
On Friday, schools superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho decried the violence threatening Miami-Dade County youth after three ninth graders were shot that day and a transportation van carrying 14 students was fired upon during the morning commute to school.
"If this is not a wake-up call to the entire community, I don't know what would be," he said at the time. "My heart is saddened. My mind is angered over what we witnessed and went through today."
Carvalho took to Twitter on Tuesday to applaud the See Something Say Something program.
