Middle ear infection is caused because of cold or other infection of upper airways. Swelling develops in the tubes that drains ear at the back of the throat. These tubes known as eustachian tubes get filled with mucus. This swelling blocks the drainage of fluid from the middle ear to the back of the throat. Germ build up starts in the stagnant fluid and eventually infection of the middle ear infection develops. This contamination is quite common in kids because the eustachian tubes are narrower and thus fluid gets trapped easily in the middle ear resulting infection.
